IIT Indore Celebrates Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri Jayanti with Swachhata Drive
The Indian Institute of Technology Indore (IIT Indore) celebrated the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri on Friday, October 2, 2026, alongside the Swachhata Hi Seva 2026, reaffirming its commitment to cleanliness, environmental conservation and community engagement.
The programme was graced by Prof. Kanhaiya Tripathi, Special Monitor, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), and hosted by Prof. Suhas Joshi, Director, IIT Indore. The celebrations commenced with the inauguration of an exhibition organised by the Centre for Rural Development and Technology (CRDT), IIT Indore, to mark the occasion. Prof. Sandeep Chaudhary, Professor-in-Charge, CRDT, introduced the programme and presented an overview of the Centre’s activities.
A plantation drive under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ initiative was a key highlight of the celebrations. Conducted in the gracious presence of Prof. Kanhaiya Tripathi, the initiative underscored IIT Indore’s commitment to environmental conservation and sustainability. Participants also took the Swachhata Pledge, reaffirming their commitment to maintaining cleanliness and promoting responsible practices. Prof. Kanhaiya Tripathi felicitated the awardees for their contributions to cleanliness under the campaign.
Addressing the gathering, Prof. Kanhaiya Tripathi extended his greetings on the birth anniversaries of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. Emphasising the relevance of Gandhian philosophy, he remarked that only an individual with a universal outlook can truly understand the essence of Swaraj. He also highlighted the importance of self-respect for individual growth and societal progress.
Prof. Suhas Joshi congratulated the awardees recognised for their contributions to cleanliness under Swachhata Hi Seva Abhiyan 2026. Highlighting the importance of cleanliness in everyday life, he remarked that cleanliness is next to godliness and encouraged everyone to embrace it as a personal responsibility and collective commitment.
As part of the visit, Prof. Kanhaiya Tripathi also interacted with Prof. Suhas Joshi, Director, IIT Indore, Deans, Heads of Departments, Faculty members and other senior officials in a meeting that provided a platform for meaningful interaction and discussion on key institutional matters.
The celebration reflected the enduring values of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri, inspiring the IIT Indore community to contribute towards a cleaner, greener and more responsible society.
