Dr Vibhutendra Mohanty’s expertise shines in complex Angioplasty case
Showcasing the groundbreaking potential of modern interventional cardiology, a recent high-risk angioplasty at Sum Ultimate Medicare in Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, was performed by Dr. Vibhutendra Mohanty, a renowned interventional cardiologist. This case emphasizes the growing preference for minimally invasive treatments in managing Coronary Artery Disease (CAD), especially in patients with complex co-morbidities.
The procedure involved an 63-year-old male patient who has a history of diabetes and hypertension. He presented with complaints of palpitations for over a month and was subsequently diagnosed with Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) with a long blockage in his Right Coronary Artery (RCA). Given the patient’s advanced age and co-existing medical conditions, the case presented a heightened level of risk. Recognizing the need and considering the patient’s condition, Dr. Mohanty and his team opted for an advanced angioplasty procedure with a hybrid and tailored approach using a Drug Eluting Stent in the Proximal (Beginning) & wider part of the artery along with Metal-Less Angioplasty approach using a Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB) in Mid to Distal (ending) & the narrower part of the artery. This choice was made to minimize the metal load and keep the future options open for the potential treatments such as Bypass or open heart surgery where a surgen requires the Mid-Distal artery open for the surgery.
The Drug Coated Balloon, also known as a Drug Eluting Balloon (DCB/DEB), represents a novel technology in the treatment of CAD. This technique involves using a balloon dilatation catheter that reaches the blocked location in the heart artery and opens up the blockage followed by a Drug Coated balloon which is intended to release drug with anti-proliferative and anti-inflammatory properties to heal the injury caused during lesion dilation procedure.
Moreover, the significant advantage of Metal-Less Angioplasty is the absence of a permanent metallic implant in the treated region, allowing the artery to maintain its natural shape and function. Furthermore, it simplifies any future treatments required in the same artery, as there is no permanent implant to navigate around. This aspect was particularly crucial given the patient’s multiple co-morbidities, which necessitated a treatment option that would not exacerbate his underlying conditions.
Post-procedure, the patient experienced a smooth recovery and was discharged within three days. His recovery period was marked by stability and a return to everyday life with prescribed medications and healthy lifestyle modifications.
“The success of this high-risk angioplasty procedure highlights the crucial role of innovative techniques in interventional cardiology. It is gratifying to extend a helping hand to our patients, offering them advanced & tailored treatments that significantly improve their quality of life,” said Interventional Cardiologist Dr Vibhutendra Mohanty, expressing his views on this medical case.
The effectiveness of this advanced angioplasty procedure emphasizes its crucial position in contemporary cardiology, providing fresh optimism and enhanced opportunities for individuals with Coronary Artery Disease, mainly those with complex co-morbidities. Dr. Mohanty is dedicated to propelling the realm of advanced cardiology and providing exceptional care using state-of-the-art innovations in the medical sector.
